Marek Partyš honours the National History Archive with this cinematic film for Post Bellum. Echoing the true-life events of Czech poet and art historian Vêra Jirousová, ’Mother’ is dedicated to her, and the other great women who stood up to the communist regime, against all odds.

Immediately after the signing of Charter 77, she was demoted from her job at the Academy of Sciences, to a cleaner. The StB interrogated her at least once a month, repeatedly conducted thorough house searches and monitored her every move.

Described as fragile in constitution, with an undeniable strength of character, Vêra was a very autonomous person. Proud, and able to resist the pressures of the time. She was always sure of what she wanted to say and do for the future of her children, and country.
