ScrollCongratulations to Sam Neill for his Abbey Road Photography Awards 2024 nomination, in the ‘Music Moment of the Year’ category. Head over to their website now to vote for his photograph of Fred Again, at Alexandra Palace.
“The photo was taken at Ally Pally last year when Fred Again.. played five sold-out nights. I was brought in by Fred's creative director Lucy Hickling to capture the atmosphere and production of the show. Honestly, it was probably the sweatiest show I've been to with nonstop energy extruding from the crowd. I wanted to capture a photo which told the story of the show through the perspective of someone on the shoulders of their mate. I managed to battle myself through the sea of people with my camera. My OCD coupled with determination, I managed to get into a position perfectly central to the ginormous screen above.
When Fred finished the first act on stage he battled through the crowd with his security, splitting the audience like Moses split the Red Sea. I extended my camera above the crowd and waited for the lights to turn on. I’d been given a Fred Again.. tee shirt earlier in the day, so I knew that they were being sold at the show but I didn’t expect the guy centralised in front of Fred to be wearing one. It almost looks like he was deliberately placed there for the shot."
